The whole thread about "lump it or leave it", and Howard's complaints about Dave's use of sarcasm, got me thinking. Aspnes correctly described some of Dave's responses as gleeful, which isn't very polite. And political discussions would be really boring without the sort of gentle exaggeration/sarcasm that Dave used (no way to avoid offending Jeanie, except maybe a pure text poster that said "Censorship isn't very nice.") Howard considered them rude, and maybe they were. But nothing along the lines of opinion's heyday. As I heard the tale, cmu.cs.discussion was formed by someone who was accused of pedophilia during a flamewar on opinion! So what we need is a new newsgroup: cmu.cs.polite.discussion. It would be moderated, or maybe impolite people like Dave and me could just be banned from ever posting to it. Sarcasm, exaggeration, and any imputation of ANY characteristic to members of the department could be banned. And if on elevators, why not on polite bboards? People could just cancel messages that offend them. Dave's above point would have to be stated something like Could you express the Clitoral Hood's message in a non-offensive political message? And most importantly, no one would *ever* have to hear something painful and ugly like lump it or leave it I'll do it even if you're offended by it taking down political posters is immoral on cmu.cs.polite.discussion.
